A modern reflection
A way to look at this moment.
Returning is not always going backward. It can be a quiet recognition of what restores you after distraction or strain. Start with a small, repeatable action rather than a dramatic promise to become a different person overnight.
Sit with this question
What would a gentle return to your values look like today?
One small practice.
Restart one helpful practice for just five minutes.
A return can begin with a small movement
Thunder lies within earth, and one solid line sits at the base beneath five broken lines. The diagram makes a modest beginning visible. Return can be read here as the moment you notice a useful direction again, before momentum has become established. A small action may be more appropriate than a dramatic declaration of change.
An example in everyday life
You have stopped a writing practice for several weeks. Instead of trying to catch up with everything you missed, write one paragraph today and choose a manageable time tomorrow. The return is real because you have resumed the practice, even if your output is smaller than before.
A common misreading
Returning does not always mean restoring a former relationship, job, or way of life. Some conditions have changed. Ask which underlying value is worth recovering and which old arrangement no longer fits. A return to attention may require a different outward form.
Reading 24 without changing lines
With no changing lines, give the first returning impulse enough time to become a pattern. What would make repeating this action easy? Resist the urge to judge the whole process by a single good day or a single interruption.
Explore the relationship between images
In the worked example, line 1 changing turns 24 into 2. Hexagram 40 offers another perspective on restarting after a difficulty has loosened.
The image & the structure.
This hexagram places earth above thunder. The lower trigram evokes awakening movement; the upper trigram evokes receptive ground. Consider these as images to explore rather than instructions to follow.
The six lines are read from the bottom upward. A solid line is yang; a broken line is yin. In a coin reading, some lines may change and form a relating hexagram. A hexagram on its own does not specify which lines are changing.
